Ring Video Doorbell Review (2nd Generation)

I’m excited to share my experience with the Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation). I’ve had it for a few months now & it’s a pretty cool addition to my home security. If you’re thinking about getting a smart video doorbell, here’s a Ring Video Doorbell Review (2nd Generation) rundown of what you can expect from this device.

Ring Video Doorbell Review, Design and Durability

Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) built to withstand various weather conditions—water-resistant working in wide temp range from -5°F to 120°F (-20°C to 48°C). Had it through rain, snow & hot days; performed reliably without issues.

Design-wise? It’s sleek and modern! Got mine in Satin Nickel—it looks stylish on my doorframe—not too big but noticeable enough as deterrent for intruders.

Dimensions are 4.98 inches x 2.44 inches x 1.10 inches (126.5mm x 62mm x 28mm), making it nice fit for most doorframes—Available in Satin Nickel & Venetian Bronze—choose one best matching your home’s exterior!

Initial Setup and Installation

Setting up the Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) was super easy. I mean, even for someone like me who isn’t exactly a DIY expert. The box has everything you need: the doorbell itself, a micro USB charging cable, a mounting bracket (only compatible with this generation of the Ring doorbell), installation tools, a user manual & a security sticker. The instructions were clear. The whole process took just about 10 minutes.

You have two ways to power the doorbell. You can use the built-in rechargeable battery or connect it to your existing doorbell wiring. I chose the battery because I didn’t want to mess with wiring. It’s been working great. The battery life is impressive—I only had to recharge it once so far, and that was more out of caution than necessity.

Installation cage

If you prefer a wired setup, the doorbell supports standard systems with 8-24 VAC transformers. This means if you want a more permanent solution & don’t mind some electrical work, you can go for it. But honestly, the battery option is perfectly convenient for me.

Video Quality and Motion Detection

First thing you’ll notice? The 1080p HD video quality. The picture is crystal clear, day and night. The night vision is super impressive—not that grainy black-and-white stuff you’d expect. It’s clear enough to see details, which is crucial for security purposes.

The field of view? Pretty generous too. With a 155° horizontal & 90° vertical range, I can see not just who’s at my door but also a good portion of my front yard. This wide field of view is great for keeping an eye on packages or anyone approaching the house.

Day footage

Advanced motion detection is another highlight. You can adjust motion zones, so you don’t get notifications every time a car drives by. I’ve set it up to cover just the front porch and immediate area outside, so I only get alerts when something important happens.

Two-Way Audio and Privacy Features

The two-way audio feature is fantastic! It allows me to speak to whoever’s at the door through my phone, tablet or PC. Super useful for quick chats with delivery people or visitors. Noise cancellation works well but if there’s a lot of background noise, sometimes hard to hear. Still much better than other video doorbells I’ve tried.

One standout feature? Privacy zones & audio privacy settings! You can set up specific areas where the camera won’t record and mute audio to avoid capturing conversations you don’t want recorded. Great for ensuring your doorbell doesn’t invade neighbor’s privacy or capture sensitive info inadvertently.

Mobile Notifications and Integration

Receiving mobile notifications when someone presses the doorbell or triggers motion sensors has been seamless! Notifications are instant & Ring app makes it easy to view live video and communicate with whoever’s at the door. User-friendly app interface makes navigating settings & features simple.

I’ve paired my Ring doorbell with Alexa-enabled devices too, adding another layer of convenience! Now I get announcements through my Echo when someone’s at the door & can see live feeds on Fire TV and Echo Show. Handy especially when busy!

With Ring Protect Plan (subscription sold separately), you get additional benefits like recording all videos and reviewing footage from past 180 days—great for checking missed deliveries or reviewing incidents. Subscription also allows sharing videos & photos which keeps family or neighbors in loop.

Power Options and Connectivity

As mentioned earlier—power the Ring Video Doorbell with built-in rechargeable battery or connect existing wires for constant power—flexibility is great esp if not comfortable with electrical work or renting so can’t make permanent changes!

Ring Video Doorbell charging port

Requires high-speed internet connection via 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz—connection stable for me; no significant lag or downtime experienced!

Ring Protect Plan and Additional Features

Ring Protect Plan worth considering if wanting most outta your doorbell—for small monthly fee—you get access to recorded videos reviewable up-to 180 days—incredibly useful for missed events or sharing videos w/someone!
